Abstractions Bamako

Fully abstract painting is not widespread in West Africa, even if many west african painters have an abstract style. In March 2017, I set up this duo exhibition with Mamadou Keïta at Medina Gallery (Bamako, Mali) in order to show abstract painting in a West African capital.
What’s about abstraction ? «Dans un univers sans homme, il y a souvent une part de tragédie, et cela donne toujours une profondeur à la beauté. […] L’univers sans l’homme évoque quatre formes d’absolu : l’absolu d’avant l’homme, l’absolu d’après l’homme, l’absolu du très lointain et l’absolu de l’infiniment petit, auxquelles nous n’avons jamais accès. Ces formes nous procurent un vertige. L’esthétique de l’univers sans l’homme est celle du vertige, physique et métaphysique» (Thomas Schlesser in Libération).
But the border between figuration and abstraction is often thin. In this exhibition, one can guess a skyline, a silhouette…
For this exhibition, Mamadou Keïta and I worked together at Medina Gallery. During this residency we exchanged not only our materials but also our techniques : for the first time, I painted on canvas while Mamadou Keïta painted on cardboard. He also used my sander and I learnt his dripping technique.
